Researchers from the University of Tanzania worked on forest biomass estimation in the tropical forest of Tanzania. They investigated the performance of Sentinel 2 and Planet Scope data in this domain, looking to develop cost-effective methods for AGB. Their findings highlight that both data improved the precisions of AGB estimates by about 20% and 10%, respectively, compared to field-based measurement.
They also mentioned that few studies have reported on the ability to estimate and map AGB in tropical forests, despite the free availability of Sentinel-2 and Planet Scope data. And they stressed the importance of knowing the performance of free available satellite data, as it sets a baseline for developing a robust method for estimating AGB at different spatial scales in dense tropical forests.
