Hi all,

First post so forgive if the style is off.

I use Earth observation data on large conservation regions (100k ha or more). As we identify hotspots or management units, I run into trouble referencing the location on the ground. The coordinates of course can guide the teams there, but in conversation a management unit ends up being “that spot by the river”. We need a way to name our conservation areas to help with communication.

We use H3 polygons to give each area a unique tag (see the viewer here: https://clupasq.github.io/h3-viewer/). This string is a great indexing tool to create identifiable and constant management units, and we see even the potential of AI agent integration. However these strings are not easy to remember and saying “How is 86b8c423 going?” is robotic.

The project What 3 Words (https://what3words.com/) claims to be “The simplest way to talk about location”. We are considering using this to change the name of our MU to a name like suceed.boots.icon. Then we can say “How is the boots icon recovery going?”. Ideally not every management unit gets a name so its a short list to bring into ground team vernacular.

H3 is hexagons, and what 3 Words is 3m square. We are considering using the hexagon centroid and finding the overlapping 3 word code.

What do you think? Anyone else working in large, unlabeled areas?

Best,

Michael
