Accessing VIIRS imagery (successor to MODIS) via Planet API or other supported sources

Hi everyone,

I’m currently exploring how to use VIIRS data as a replacement for MODIS imagery in our monitoring platform. I can access to MODIS through Sentinel Hub’s Request Builder and EO Browser, but those datasets no longer provide recent imagery.

We’re now looking for a way to access recent VIIRS data (e.g., VNP43IA4 or equivalent) — ideally through an API — so it can be processed or integrated into our own monitoring system.

I understand that Planet’s Analysis Ready PlanetScope (ARPS) products are radiometrically harmonized with MODIS/VIIRS data, so I’d like to confirm:

  • Does Planet provide direct access to VIIRS imagery (or derived products) via its API?

  • If not, is there any recommended workflow or source (e.g., NASA LP DAAC, NOAA, or third-party integration) to retrieve current VIIRS data that could later be combined with Planet imagery?

  • Any examples or documentation about how to automate the download or ingestion of VIIRS scenes into a custom monitoring platform would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for your time and guidance!

Hi,

Thanks for the question, unfortunately, we do not provide access to VIIRS imagery via our APIs and there aren’t any plans to add this as a datasource in the near future. I don’t have any recommendations on a source or workflow either that a Google search would not also provide you.

Sorry we can’t be of more help!
