Offline monitoring in the Peruvian Amazon

Rainforest Foundation US facilitates training in using NICFI Satellite Data Program data to 5 indigenous organizations and 33 Amazonian native people from Kichwa, Shipibo and Ticuna communities in Peru.The basemaps are downloaded in satellite information hubs, transformed into android format and transferred to the native communities. Community patrols use the basemaps on their smartphones to plan patrols to validate early deforestation alerts.Additionally, native communities create maps using NICFI Basemaps to help indigenous monitors and community watch committees to plan their patrol routes and make their performance more efficient.The satellite images, plus the evidence gathered in the patrols, are used to identify causes of forest loss, responsible actors, and, when relevant, file complaints with the government authorities.During a conversation with Cameron Ellis from Rainforest Foundation US, he mentioned that the NICFI Satellite Data Program has filled a missing piece in many com

NICFI basemaps on detecting illegal mining in Brazil

An unprecedented study of clandestine airstrips in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, conducted in a partnership between The New York Times, The Intercept, the Pulitzer Center and Earthrise Media, gathered data on illegal mining 🎉The team compiled the possible locations of illegal airstrips by gathering data from Open Street Maps, the Socio-Environmental Institute and Hutukara. Then, by cross-referencing the geographic coordinates of the runways with mining deforestation alerts from Amazon Mining Watch, they found that 1,269 unregistered airstrips were still in active use in the last year and documented signs of mining nearby, such as cleared forest areas and mining pools. The team used satellite imagery 🛰 and geospatial analysis 🗺 to locate the airstrips and interconnect them with illegal mining, benefiting from NICFI data. In addition, they determined that hundreds of the airstrips in mining areas are located within indigenous and protected lands, where any form of mining is against

Large-area Mapping of Active Cropland and Short-Term Fallows in Northern Mozambique, using PlanetScope Data

This month, Philippe Rufin, Adia Bey, Michelle Picoli and Patrick Meyfroidt published the article "Large-area mapping of active cropland and short-term fallows in smallholder landscapes using PlanetScope data" in the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation. The research focuses on a study area in Northern Mozambique, where they presented a framework for mapping active cropland and short-term fallows in highly fragmented smallholder landscapes. The results of this study aim to minimize financial constraints and maximize the replicability of the methods. All code and maps are made available for further use. To conduct the study, they used Planet Scope mosaics available through the NICFI data and integrated them into Google Earth Engine. Their methodology consisted of derived seasonal analysis-ready datasets from coregistered time series of PlanetScope mosaics and used iterative learning to map active and fallow cropland. Continued Deforestation in Papua, Indonesia

Satellite imagery demonstrates the ongoing deforestation within a palm oil firm in Palma province of Indonesia. Although the environment ministry canceled permits of 137 palm oil firms, activity in the concessions, overlapping with the land of the Namblong Indigenous community, continued. Which Method is Used to Create the Planet & NICFI Tropical Monitoring Basemaps

Are the pixels/images selected based on a quality assesment, or is the median / mean used? If I know this, I can make a better assesment on what period / situation the basemaps represent.

NICFI Satellite Data in Payments for Environmental Services in Mato Grosso, Brazil

The Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) uses NICFI satellite data in the CONSERV initiative in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This initiative is based on Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) to farmers who register in their program and conserve native forests on their properties. NICFI data is essential for monitoring native vegetation on members' farms so members can receive their payment for preserving the natural ecosystem. IPAM also uses NICFI data to conduct complementary assessments of databases on deforestation, degradation, fire, and permits to remove native vegetation from farms. Additionally, they use the imagery to obtain temporal patterns of Vegetation Indexes to map specific land uses for single plots on different farms. New Partnership for Guyana’s Solar Energy Future

For many years, Guyana has been one of the world’s leading countries on rainforest protection and maintains 85% of its forest cover. The rate of deforestation in Guyana is only 0,05%.Thanks to the low deforestation rates of Guyana, a partnership agreement between Guyana, Norway and the Inter-American Development Bank has been signed on this year’s World Rainforest day (22nd of June).The Guyana Utility Scale Solar Photovoltaic Program (GUYSOL) will invest in 8 large-scale solar energy projects that will be funded by NICFI. Deforestation in Conflict Areas in 2020

Eoghan Darbyshire from CEOBS conducted evaluations on the current state of forest loss and deforestation rates in conflict areas in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work has been done by gathering data from NICFI Satellite Data Program, global forest loss maps, and deforestation alerts on Global Forest Watch. Deforestation in Tesso Nilo National Park, Indonesia

Mongabay was able to report on how Tesso Nilo National Park, home to Sumatran wildlife including endangered tigers and elephants, has been facing deforestation since 2010. The rate in 2021 almost tripled that of 2020, and Planet-NICFI basemaps present further deforestation in 2022. New Areas of Primary Forest Cleared in Lábrea, Brazil

In 2021, The Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) lab at the University of Maryland identified areas of newly cleared forest in Lábrea, Amazonas, close to the indigenous and protected lands. Based on the satellite imagery provided by Planet, deforestation occurred in four areas and covers around 2,115 hectares (5,226 acres). This is how the damage of the desert locust outbreak in Ethiopia is detected using NICFI basemaps!

Ethiopia experienced the worst desert locust outbreak in 2020, which increased food insecurity. This year, Woubet G. Alemu and Christopher S. R. Neigh published their article titled "Desert Locust Cropland Damage Differentiated from Drought with Multi-Source Remote Sensing in Ethiopia" in the Remote Sensing Journal (MDPI). Their research targets to estimate desert locusts' paths and breeding sites using satellite remote sensing and climate factors. The team used multiple remote sensing sources to conduct this study and analyze the damage of desert locusts in the region. One of the sources they benefited from is monthly PlanetScope Basemaps, provided freely by the NICFI Satellite Data Program. Additionally, to differentiate between cropland damage from desert locusts and the usual drought conditions of the region, the researchers made a detailed remote sensing-based analysis of drought in Ethiopia. Evaluating deforestation in Equatorial Asia with Nusantara Atlas

Nusantara Atlas is a platform aimed at monitoring drivers of deforestation, fires, peatland degradation and forest regeneration in Equatorial Asia. It includes Planet-NICFI basemaps publicly available through the NICFI Data Satellite Program, as well as satellite images from Sentinel 2, Landsat, NOAA-20, S-NP, and MODIS, near-real-time deforestation alerts (RADD ; GLAD), fire hotspots (VIIRS and MODIS) and cadastral information.Users can generate time lapse satellite animations on the fly using Planet/NICFI, Sentinel-2, Landsat and share and save the results. It also presents stories and reports on deforestation and fires in such frameworks.About the latter, a research on Nusantara Atlas presents significant news on palm oil based- deforestation in Tesso Nilo Park in Indonesia. Landslide Monitoring in Ecuador

This week’s user story is about monitoring a landslide area in Ecuador. In February 2020, the San Rafael waterfall collapsed, and regressive erosion started around the Coca River, which put the environment and indigenous communities in the surrounding area in danger. The study area is located in Northeast Ecuador, at the River Coca, between the San Rafael Waterfall and the Coca Codo Sinclair Hydropower Dam and close to the volcano Reventador. They analyzed the erosion event with Sentinel-1 SAR data and included in the validation the PS Tropical Normalized Analytic Biannual Archive basemap from June to November 2019 and PlanetScope Imagery between 2020-02-14 and 2020-03-2021. The researchers emphasized that remote sensing and GIS are crucial for assessing and analyzing landslide areas and particularly significant for better regional risk management.Click here to read the article and learn more about the research.

Basemap viewer and GEE's tfrecord image different

We notice a significant difference between some images that Planet shows us on its Planet-NICFI Basemap Viewer and those extracted in TFRecord format. Here is a guided example of what we notice:There is a shp and a geojson (id_27954006.zip) of a 540x540 meters grid on this link: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1jv-oFoLkJZLCJieXIpULBYxqsPg6wl32?usp=sharingThis is what this geometry looks like in ‘planet_medres_normalized_analytic_2021-10_mosaic’ in Basemap Viewer: Basemap View of the id_27954006.geojson in 2021-10 normalized mosaicWe extract the NICFI-Planet geometry of this shp into TFRecord files using Planet integration with Google Earth Engine. Tropical Americas Image Collections are filtered as in the developer’s example using python.
