In the September Agile EO webinar episode, we shared an introduction to Planet's first hyperspectral satellite, Tanager.

In less than 30 minutes you can learn how this cutting-edge technology delivers a new level of detail, unlocking deeper insights and uncovering the unseen on our planet. Watch the webinar on-demand now to get started.

Below are answers to questions from the live event and resources to get you started.

Q&A - Products

Question: Are the multiple sensitivity modes available for any use-case or just CH4?

Answer: The use of the multiple sensitivity modes are available for any use-case and their use is dependent on the signal-to-noise ratio requirements for your specific application. If you are not sure please experiment with various sensitivity modes to determine the right mode.

Question: Are you able to speak more on, or point to a resource to learn about, the calibration behind your methane products to a PPM unit?

Answer: Yes the Carbon Mapper emissions monitoring system pre-print provides details on calibration and methodology for deriving concentration values (PPM) from satellite observations.

Question: What does it mean for the Core Imagery to be in public beta?

Answer: Surface Reflectance (SR) is currently in Public Beta. This means it’s stable enough to be broadly used, but it’s not yet the final release version. Public Beta products don’t have a latency SLA, though we make our best effort to deliver them quickly. Other Core Imagery products such as rectified/unrectified or basic/ortho Top-of-Atmosphere Radiance are also available.

Question: What is the difference between the methane subscription vs. what is available via Carbon mapper?

Answer: The Tanager Methane Monitoring subscription gives customers early, commercial-use access to methane emissions detections, delivered within days of acquisition. This enables timely operational and compliance actions.

The Carbon Mapper public portal provides the same data after a 30-day delay, under a modified Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license that restricts it to non-commercial use (e.g., research, education, public-good activities).

Question: What is the best way to browse the archive of collected scenes?

Answer: Archive Tanager data can be discovered at planet.com/explorer with the filter for TanagerScenes.

Question: Can you speak to the radiometric error, and some kind of normalized SNR?

Answer: Independent and internal reviews confirm our imagery is geographically precise to within one pixel of its true location, radiometrically accurate to within 5% of trusted benchmarks, and spatially sharp enough to resolve fine details on the ground. Planet intends to prepare a peer-reviewed publication with these results.

Question: Is Tanager data available for E&R account customers, universities, professors and students?

Answer: At this time it is not included, but is something we are working on to include for Education & Research (E&R) customers.

Q&A - Applications & Use

Question: Have you developed the ability to use the hyperspectral to identify invasive species?

Answer:  Yes, hyperspectral imagery is well-suited to vegetation analysis, including invasive species detection. We are looking to partners to develop the full suite of solutions at this time and is not a product Planet is offering at this time.

Question: any tutorials where we can learn more about hyperspectral imaging and how to deal with it?

Answer:  Courses found on Planet University for Tanager are a good introduction. In addition:

Question: Do we have any open source software to play with hyperspectral imaging data?

Answer:  Explore sample data and code: Open STAC Tanager core imagery, Google Earth Engine community catalog, and visualize with Hypercoast (+ a video tutorial)
