For last month’s Agile EO Webinar, we went “back to school” with Product 101: a review of Planet’s core product offerings. As many kids return to school after summer break in the northern hemisphere, we wanted to embrace the beginner’s mindset and go back to basics.

We covered Planet’s 4 core product pillars:

The first two pillars (Monitoring and Tasking) deliver data captured from Planet’s proprietary fleet of satellites orbiting the earth, while the other pillars (Planetary Variables and Platform) synthesize already collected data from multiple sources to help you gather rich insights and answer key questions.

We also touched on learning resources like Planet University and Planet Community.

Check out the webinar recording here to learn more about each product, see example use cases, and to get a peak at what will be released in the coming months.

Since we didn’t get time to answer all of the questions submitted during the webinar, we are sharing them here:

WIll access from QGIS be comparable to that from ESRI products?

Planet's Plugin for QGIS and ArcGIS Pro Add-In are comparable in functionality.  If you have any product enhancement requests, feel free to submit your idea in Planet Community under the Product Ideas section.

When did the 8 spectral band data become available?

The first flock of 8-band SuperDoves launched in early 2021, with general availability beginning in March of 2021.

I am a Planet Partner, what is the best way to know all the products I can offer?

Contracted partners have access to our Planet Orbit Partner Portal where they can access product and technical information, sales and marketing tools, and register and track opportunities.

What is the minimum area required for new collect 50-cm imagery? What is the minimum width for linear collections for new collect 50-cm data?

Current minimum areas for new SkySat tasked collects are 25 sq km for point or area collects and 30 sq km for linear collects (images a 5 km wide strip up to a maximum length of 100 km).

Do you have sponsored programs for STEM schools that teach the basics of Remote sensing, GIS etc.?

We offer select Planet University courses to anyone free of cost.

We also offer limited non-commercial access to PlanetScope and RapidEye imagery to qualifying university students.  You can learn more and apply here

Are Skysat images orthorectified when delivered by Planet?

SkySay orders let you choose rectified and unrectified assets in a variety of forms to suit different needs - from a full orthorectified image with color corrections and pansharpening to basic unrectified L1A data.

SkySat can be tasked to collect off-nadir and collects with high angles (more oblique), particularly over mountainous terrain, may cause irregularities when mosaicking adjacent collects.

Are Tanager and/or Pelican expected to launch this year?

Tanager 1 is expected to be ready for launch in 2024. Recently, on September 14, 2023, the imaging spectrometer, developed by NASA JPL, was delivered to our team for integration onto our Tanager 1 hyperspectral satellite.

Pelican’s first Tech Demo, TD1, is now fully built and expected to be ready for launch later this year.
