In this month’s Agile EO webinar, Data Storage and Streaming on Planet Insights Platform, we shared how to migrate your workflows to the cloud, create custom visualizations, and stream data with OGC services. Watch the webinar on-demand here

Below are some questions we received during the event and resources to learn more.

Question 1: Can you access your Planet cloud imagery collections from Google Earth Engine?

Answer: Yes, Planet has integration support with Google Earth Engine, but not directly from the image collections hosted on the Planet Insights Platform. The integration is done via the Orders API, which can deliver imagery directly to Google Earth Engine. While a user interface enhancement could be a future consideration, currently, the process requires separate data delivery using APIs.

Question 2: Do you need a Sentinel Hub account to use this?

Answer: Yes, a Sentinel Hub account is required to access and use the data in this collection. Planet offers trial access via a six-month limited account for existing Planet customers.

Question 3: If we want to do a detailed imagery/raster analysis in ArcGIS Pro, do we have to save the collection as WMTS (Web Map Tile Service)?

Answer: WMTS is not ideal for detailed analysis. Instead, users can create custom visualizations using Evalscripts, which offers control over data analysis (e.g., change detection using NDVI). The results can be streamed directly to ArcGIS for advanced raster analysis. There are multiple integration options, including using the RGIS Image Server for automated workflows.

Question 4: Can 4-band and 8-band PlanetScope scenes be combined in one collection?

Answer: ICollections are homogeneous—one collection for 4-band data and another for 8-band data. This ensures consistency for analysis and visualization scripts. While some compositing can be done using Evalscripts, it’s best to avoid mixing these bands in the same collection to prevent confusion during analysis.

Question 5: Does delivering to imagery collection cost money?

Answer: Yes, there are costs associated with using data stored in imagery collections.  When you view or analyze this data, you use processing units.

Question 6: What can I do using Sentinel Hub APIs that I can’t do using Hosted Data?

Answer: There are a few things. One, access more advanced analysis capabilities like applying custom visualization and processing scripts to your data. Two, access more advanced streaming capabilities such as applying more custom preferences to your streaming data using the configuration utility. For example, applying AOI/TOI, cloud cover, and composite preferences to your streaming services so you have more control over the data streamed to your applications. Lastly, access more visualization options using EO Browser.

Question 7: How can I migrate my workflows from Hosted Data to Sentinel Hub?

Answer: Today, you can use the Explorer imagery checkout workflow to deliver images directly to image collections in Sentinel Hub. We will be following up with all Hosted Data users soon with a plan to migrate their hosted data to Sentinel Hub imagery collections at no additional download cost
