NDWI for lake water detection

Yes NDWI is overall very good for detecting surface water, but when the colour is effected by sediment or algae this will impact the spectral response.

You could try other indices with Sentinel such as the MNDWI which utilises the green and SWIR bands. Alternatively, you could use Sentinel-1 GRD or even use both sensors together using Data Fusion.
