In the August Agile EO episode, we shared how to develop apps for agriculture with Planet Insights Platform.

In 30 minutes we covered simple data acquisition and management, self-service functionality, and a live demo including writing analysis evalscripts and viewing outputs.

Q&A

Below are answers to questions from the live event and resources to get you started.

Question: How much does Area Under Management cost? And is the data daily and cloud-free?

Answer: The price of the annual subscription varies depending on the location. You can check the pricing here. Data is collected near-daily and it is optical data. You can filter out the clouds when present, using the usable data mask.

Question: What are reasonable plot dimensions to generate high quality data for analysis based on NDVI?

Answer: The pixel size is 3.7 meters. In one hectare, that is more than 700 pixels. We have customers working in very small fields (smaller than 0.1 hectares) with success. The shape of the polygon has an effect on this as some pixels might be partially inside the polygon.

Question: Can PlanetScope deal with cloudy regions?

Answer: PlanetScope’s high revisit results in a higher number of cloud-free observations when compared with other sources of satellite data.

Question: Could you tell me how I can detect a crop across the imagery?

Answer: Crop identification in most cases relies on time series. We briefly covered this during the webinar, but if you’re interested in this we can talk more about it, just reach out to our team.

Question: With a Planet Insights Platform account, could someone from my team like a marine biologist be able to sign in and access the data?

Answer: Yes, you can add multiple users from your organization to access and work with satellite data.

Question: I’m wondering about the charge for computation and does it support GPU (like if i want to build a deep learning model)?

Answer: Planet does not currently support inferencing with your own deep learning model on our platform. We do currently offer automated feeds of object detection for roads, buildings, vessels, and aircraft. If you would like to run your own models on our infrastructure, please let us know by creating a product idea in Planet Community.

However, you can always extract images to use as inputs for processing on your own infrastructure - both for training and inferencing - and the cost for computation to do this would be outlined in the processing unit documentation.

Question: Are there any notifications or triggers that allow integration with outside applications to enable automation with other systems?

Answer: Planet does not offer automated notifications systems.

Question: How can I get access to a demo platform to figure out if this would be suitable?

Answer: You can try it for 30 days by signing up here.

Question: Could I create an app that pulls individual data for a particular customer once requested, and if that can be done, will the data still be managed by Planet or our own resources?

Answer: Yes, you can use Planet’s APIs in your backend infrastructure or data processing pipeline. You can isolate different customers' data into different data collections on the platform. Planet does not offer user identity management for your customers, though, and this is something that you would implement yourself through middleware.

Question: How can I use Planet data in Google Earth Engine or other cloud based platforms?

Answer: We have an integration for GEE. You can learn more about it here.

Question: What are the 8-bands for PlanetScope imagery?

Answer: You can read about this in our documentation. The 8 bands are coastal blue, blue, yellow, green, green I, red, red edge, and near-infrared.

Question: Are there bulk upload options for field boundaries? Additionally, can the platform handle multi-polygon type geometries within the same field?

Answer: Yes, you can bulk upload through our Features Manager app and Features API. MultiPolygon AOIs are supported provided they meet geometry rules and vertex limits.

Question: Are Planetary Variables available via self-service subscriptions?

Answer: Not currently available, please contact sales if you’d like to discuss Planetary Variables.

Question: Does your organization offer free academic access or special licenses for students?

Answer: Yes, any university-affiliated student, faculty member or researcher can apply to our Education and Research Program here
